Keeping Calm in the Chaos: Lessons from the Set

The past month has been… chaotic. On two major creative shoots, everything that could go wrong seemed to. Stylists dropped out last minute. Set designers couldn’t make it. Props went missing. At one point, I was juggling emails, moving furniture, and holding a lighting reflector all at the same time.

But here’s what I’ve learned as a creative director running high-pressure shoots: chaos doesn’t have to derail your project, it can teach you valuable lessons.

1. Expect the unexpected on set.

No matter how much you plan, things will go wrong. Mentally preparing for surprises keeps you calmer and more focused when issues arise.

2. Roll up your sleeves and get hands-on.

From adjusting lighting to fixing wardrobe issues, stepping in wherever needed keeps the shoot moving. On chaotic creative shoots, flexibility is just as important as planning.

3. Trust your team.

Everyone faces pressure, and stress can spread fast. Relying on your team and keeping communication open is key to pulling through difficult shoots.

4. Keep a sense of humour.

A tense set can quickly become overwhelming. Small jokes or celebrating mini wins keeps morale high and energy positive.

By the end of both shoots, what had started as total disorder transformed into some of the most successful creative work we’ve produced. Not because everything went perfectly, but because we stayed calm, adapted, and found solutions as a team.

What I’ve learnt is chaos will test you, but it will also show what you’re capable of. And in my experience, learning to navigate it gracefully is one of the most valuable skills a creative can have.
